Volkswagen to Use 2011 Polo Cup for Showcasing their Diesel Power

Volkswagen’s Polo Cup India will soon begin its second edition from June. Their forthcoming season will be used as a platform for showcasing their diesel cars which will prove the efficiency and reliability of their diesel variants.

The Managing Director and President for Volkswagen India, Dr. John Chacko, said that they want to prove that diesel engines can be as reliable as other variants and survive two difficult racing seasons. He also added that their company wanted to up their diesel quotas. They are not able to get sufficient diesel engines for fulfilling the demand. Europe has been facing high growth, and this being a diesel market, they have to compete in it.


Volkswagen India currently offers the Polo in 1.2l diesel and petrol engine, whereas their Vento sedan is equipped with a 1.6l engine. Volkswagen Motorsports India had earlier announced that their second season of Polo Cup would commence with a race on June 17 at the Kari Motor Speedway. Twenty drivers ranging from 16 to 14 ages along with a mix of veterans and rookies would be participating in six races which will take place from June till December.

Dr. Chacko also said that the inaugural season of their Polo Cup had far exceeded their expectations last year. This year the Polo Cup will be faster, bigger and full of action, adding that they are devoted to motor sport events in India. VW received as many as 1600 registrations for the Cup and after having two selection rounds, they chose 20 drivers pan-India which include 6 from the inaugural season.

The races will take place in Delhi, Chennai and Coimbatore. VW recently unveiled their new and sportier Polo for the 2011 Polo Cup. While it is powered by the same Vento 1.6l diesel engine that was offered last year, they have made new additions which include an improved exhaust, an electronic water bottle to be used by the driver, a steering wheel with the bonnet now features a cooling duct.
