A new way to learn automobile designing from DYPDC in India

Automobile designing is one word which not many would be familiar with. Infact those in the know how can relate only some famous names across the automobile world and those names are Chris Bangle, the ex design chief of BMW and in India, Dilip Chhabria or rather DC as he is fondly called. However it was in the late 1950s that the practice of automobile designing took place in the West. The person who actually pioneered this whole concept is one Mr Harvey Earl. If you ask DC himself, he would be quick to add that in India, this concept gathered some steam only some 30 years earlier. But the good thing is that its on a growth path and hence there is more scope to it. The best part that can be attributed to this growth is that there are many world renowned companies coming into India and also bringing in their international designing units with them. Moreover, they are also setting up their manufacturing units as also separate design units outside their parent company. With all this activity, it is but natural that the demand for world class designers would stem up in India.

The primary job profile of an automobile designer is to take up the quality, function, style and also safety of an automobile to a distinct level. The outer appearance of the automobile should be look visibly different than its competitors. Its interiors are also designed by an automobile designer. Even the cabin trim and also the dashboard settings plus boot space and colors are decided by the automobile designer. What more, the automobile designer also ensures that the automobile’s engine compartment has enough space to house the engine and its related components. In India, there are not too many designing schools which cater to this need and hence the design guru himself has teamed up with the famous DY Patil group and have started an automobile design academy aptly named as DY Patil Dilip Chhabria Center for Automotive Research and Studies.
