Nissan-Ashok Leyland to launch a small car for India by 2014

With every leading brand racing for India specific vehicles, small car segment is forever booming in India. Every auto major has a small car in their current or future lineup. And now gearing up is Nissan Motors in its joint venture with Ashok Leyland, to bring the next small car priced at Rs 2 lacs to Rs 4 lacs.

During the Geneva Motor Show, Andy Palmer Executive- Vice President Nissan Motor said that the company is engaged in multiple projects with respect to the entry-level small car for the Indian auto market. Currently, they are working with Ashok Leyland on R&D of one such product and it will be launched by 2014, he added.

Their aim is to be in the volume attracting and competitive league of small cars and for that the under process car would be priced around Rs 2 lakh – Rs 4 lakh, he quoted. He did not give out any word on its power plant, specs and other details of the car.

The Japanese automaker has joint venture with Ashok Leyland for the development and production of light commercial vehicles. However, the truck giant, Ashok Leyland clarified that the development of such vehicle is for commercial purpose only, and it wont be indulged into any passenger car segment.

Nissan Motors has its diesel and petrol Micra in the current hatchback portfolio, which is offered with a price tag of Rs 4.14 lakh to Rs 6.26 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).
