GM might launch new global platform; Next Gen Chevy Cruze might be based on it

American multinational automaker, General Motors’ next-generation 2015 Chevrolet Cruze (to be brought in 2014) is being expected to be based on an all-new global platform by the carmaker. The upcoming platform is to predicate around 2.5 million GM sedans and crossovers across the globe in the coming 6 years.

Although the car manufacturer hasn’t yet confirmed it, nor it is being expected that it would, rumors are flying high that the platform would combine both the platforms of sedan and crossovers. Once the platform is unveiled, it will certainly be a revolutionary move by General Motors Co. as the platform would cover a gamut of compact vehicles under the brand, including names like Chevrolet Volt, Equinox and even Opel Astra.

Internal scoops suggest that internally, the company designated D2XX to the platform. But when the manufacturer’s spokesperson was asked about D2XX, he simply declined to recognize what it meant.

Another good news came in from the carmaker’s side when it committed to continue Cruz-production at the Lordstown, Ohio facility when the Next Gen Cruze is to go on sale. UAW officials expect the production at Lordstown to continue at least till 2019 or 2020, based on the five-to- six-year life cycle of a new or completely redesigned vehicle.

GM has been reported to have planned to invest around $220 million for the tooling and equipment requirement for the shift to the redesigned Chevrolet Cruze. Another nondisclosure that the company would follow (apart from the confirmation of new platform) is the production timing for the redesigned car. Addition of a body variant or two too seems to be on the cards for the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze. Possibilities are there that it might include a hatchback and a coupe.

In a statement, General Motors was spotted saying that the redesigned car would feature new exterior and interior styling, improved fuel economy and an improved interior compartment and more storage space.
