With best luxury car lineup in the world, Mercedes-Benz is preparing its fleet for the 2012 New York Auto Show, and joining in is the 2013 SL65 AMG.
Top of the SL class is the SL65 AMG, following similar design cues as the SL and SL63 counterparts. However, there is state-of-the-art technology housed in the SL65 as standard, including PARKTRONIC parking assistance, Bang & Olufsen premium sound, carbon fiber interior, COMAND infotainment with 40 GB hard disc and GPS Sat-Nav, MAGIC VISION CONTROL roof and automatic pop-up rollover protection.
For top-range variant, there is option of ceramic brake, AMG media package and several unique color palette options. These include Magno Cashmere White, Magno Alanite Grey, Mocha Black and Graphite.
Under the hood of the SL65 AMG, a twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12 engine, uptuned by AMG to deliver 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Dubbed M279, the new engine is based on the previous M275 V12 with significant changes done to the turbochargers to enhance power output. It features enlarged spiral cross-section, new manifolds and wastegate channels optimized for airflow, delivering an additional 17 hp boost. A multi-spark ignition system with 12 twin-ignition coils works together with the engine management system to refine the engine output and improve combustion. AMG has also redesigned the exhaust of the SL65 for improved flow together with reduced weight of up to 3.5 kg.
Mated to the V12 motor is a SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-Tronic replacing the previous 5-speed transmission. This propels the SL65 AMG from dead to 100 kmph in 3.9 seconds and AMG claimed top speed of 300 kmph. The rattling speed comes from extensive use of aluminum in body, which also adds to the improved fuel economy, with the SL65 AMG now weighing under 2050 kg. With reduced 120 kg, the new SL65 AMG also features improved performance and better handling.
Expected to hit the market by 2012 end, the SL65 AMG is set to dazzle the New York Auto Show coming up in a couple of weeks.
