Volkswagen Golf GTE Variant: To Be Revealed in Geneva

Volkswagen has revealed the first images of Golf GTE Variant, an all-new plug-in hybrid version of the multi award-winning hatchback, which fuses the advantages of electric mobility with GTI’s dynamics. The automaker is likely to launch the GTE variant at Geneva Auto Show in March. It offers the 5th variety of drive type for Golf that’s now offered with natural gas, diesel and petrol hybrid and electric motor. The Golf GTE name reflects its position in the lineup alongside diesel GTD and iconic petrol-powered GTI; where GT stands for Gran Turismo, E for Electricity, D for Diesel and I for Injection. Motivation for this variant will come from two powerplants; these include 102PS electric motor and 150PS TSI direct injection 1.4 liter petrol. Together, they combine for generating 204PS of power with 350 newton meters of torque and theatrical range of 580 miles. With this engine, the GTE can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds.

The Volkswagen Golf GTE is equipped with a DSG 6-speed transmission with triple-clutch system specially designed and engineered for hybrid cars. The electric motor is incorporated into gearbox housing, whereas further hybrid components are charger and power electronics. An electric air conditioning compressor and electro-mechanical brake servo make for energy-efficient air conditioning and braking. Visually, it combines elements of the look of GTI and e-Golf. The front bumper gets daytime running C-shaped LED lights, in addition to aerodynamic horizontal ‘fins’. The GTE has blue accents, while the GTI features red, including into the headlamps and across radiator grille. In United Kingdom, ‘Serron’ 18-inch alloy wheels come as standard. The GTE is offered in 5-door body style only.

As on the outside, the interior of Volkswagen Golf GTE gets blue highlights, including stitching on gear lever gaiter, seats and steering wheel and blue stripe in tartan pattern on sports seats. The 8-inch Discover Pro satellite navigation system with Bluetooth and DAB radio is standard, and adds bespoke functions for electric vehicles, including the ability to identify potential destinations on electric charging points and electric range. The vehicle tachometer and speedometer are familiar, and the latter is supplemented by power meter in central display that shows the battery status, whether or not power is being used and the intensity of any regeneration.
