Buyers Guide for BMW

BMW refers to Bayerische Motoren Werke. It is a German automobile manufacturer, popular mainly because of its luxury cars. Some people might not be aware that BMW is the parent company behind Rolls Royce. Also this company owns various other brands which are together referred to as the BMW group. With it’s headquarter in Delhi this company came to Indian shores in the year 2006. Currently this company has also added a manufacturing plant in Chennai, under its shed. Besides the automobile business in India, this company also caters to commercial financing, insurance solution, and retail financing, but we are not interested in any of them and I know you guys have been thinking lately that why am I going off track? Ok, so moving on to the right path I have some fantabulous automobiles lined up under this category today. Here it goes.

BMW 3 Series

They are the most famous and most successful cars amongst the various other cars in this category. BMW 3 series are definitely the sportiest and the smallest sedans from the BMW portfolio, available in Indian market. Why am I blabbering so much about these cars is because these cars provides you with almost everything that you won’t feel any need to complain. Under this category, there are three cars available namely BMW 320i, BMW 320d and BMW 330i. All three variants are available with some macho engines under the hood. BMW 320i provides an average performance amongst the three variants. While BMW 320d offers a combo offer of great economy and performance, the last but definitely not the least, BMW 330i is capable enough to blow your mind away with its performance. They according to me, definitely stand in the queue of ultimate driving machines.

Engine Options:
1995cc (320i)\ 1995cc (320d)\ 2993cc (330i)

Powertrain:
6 speed automatic

Power:
154 Bhp@6200 rpm\ 170 Bhp@4000 rpm\ 255 Bhp@6500 rpm

Torque:
19.1 Kgm@4000 rpm\ 34 Kgm@2750 rpm\ 30.4 Kgm@4000 rpm

Thumbs Up:
Almost everything but specially fuel economy, handling and performance

Thumbs Down:
Quality ride missing and the obvious, space.

Head on Competitors:
Mercedes Benz C class is a competitor but only because of its comfort ride, Audi A4

The Catch:
Rs 25.5 to Rs. 34.7 lakhs.

BMW 5 Series

Though the company has tried a lot to make these cars much-much better than their predecessors but I guess, they forgot the minute details which actually were their highlights. The things which I felt were missing are the aggressive look and the sporty stance in these cars. These cars are manufactured using the same platform as used in 7 series. So, you can really expect something great out of these cars. Those missing minute details can be overlooked, because of the various comfort features included in these cars. Definitely these cars are amongst the best buy in their category.

Engine Options:
1995cc (520d)\ 2993cc (525d)\ 2993cc (530d)\ 2497cc (523i)

The Catch:
Rs 36.5 to Rs. 58 lakhs.

BMW 7 Series

So here are ‘MY’ cars. No, I don’t own any of them but yes, these cars are my personal favourite. The reason is their ultimate sporty body that too, without any bulk. Their sleek and sporty body works well to establish their say wherever they go. One doesn’t have to ask me what is so cool about these cars as it is written all over their body. All these cars are mated with eight speed automatic transmission. The insides of these cars are equipped with all sorts of comfort features that will keep you away from any issues about these cars, though I personally feel there isn’t any problem with any of them except for the slightly stiff ride quality, but that can be overlooked.

Engine Options:
4395cc (750Li)\ 2993cc (730Ld)\ 2979cc (740Li)

Powertrain:

Ride quality only

Head on Competitors:
The Jaguar XJ, Audi A8 and Mercedes Benz S Class

The Catch:
Rs 80 lakhs to Rs 1.30 crore

BMW X1

This recently launched SUV is a real gem. Priced really low when compared against its brand name, this SUV is offered for as low as Rs. 21.5 lakhs which makes it the cheapest BMW offered in India. This SUV looks definitely amazing. The head on competitors include Nissan X Trail, Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Captiva as all of them come under the same price range. This SUV is locally assembled. Currently this SUV is available in a petrol variant and a diesel variant.

Engine Options:
1.8 liter I-4 and 2.0 liter I-4

Powertrain:
6 speed auto

150 Bhp@6400 rpm, 176 Bhp@ 4,000 rpm

Torque:
20.3 Kgm@3600 rpm, 350 Nm @ 1750 rpm

Thumbs Up:
Undoubtedly it’s price, its looks and its brand name.

Thumbs Down:
Space

Head on Competitors:
Nissan X Trail, Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Captiva

The Catch:
Rs 21.5 to Rs. 30.7 lakhs.

BMW X6

My great friend was arguing with me that this is an SUV and I didn’t try to bother myself arguing with him. But since you guys have been a lot closer to me (don’t go fancy with the word, it was only in regards to automobile), I think it is more of a crossover than a SUV. But again it all depends upon the way you see it. People get very confused about the BMW X5 and BMW X6 so let me clear this mess. So, just to tip you about both the SUV’s, BMW X5 comes with optional third row, BMW X6 is  strictly a four seater. This SUV seems to have been graced with some aero dynamic technology (but I’m still not sure about that). This SUV seems to be one of the promising SUVs in the country, maybe because of such low price but then there is no question about its performance when we talk about BMW. Isn’t it?

Engine Options:
2993cc I-6 TD

Powertrain:
6 speed auto

Power:
245 Bhp@4000 rpm

Torque:
55.1 Kgm@3000 rpm

Thumbs Up:
Features available inside the car and its performance

Thumbs Down:
Space as it is STRICTLY A FOUR SEATER

Head on Competitors:
Mercedes ML Class

The Catch:
Rs 45 lakhs and above

BMW Z4

I know my love for convertibles has been profounded on all the updates under this category and I’m too happy to tell you that, this is my favourite convertible by far. I know what you guys are thinking that first I claimed that the this two seater car has got almost everything which makes it my favourite. Firstly the aerodynamic body, secondly the ultimate design, thirdly its electrically folding hardtop and so on. The list has many entries. The best part is that every time I drive this car, it gives me goose bumps because of its exceptional performance. This is such a scintillating car according to me.

Engine Options:
4799cc V8\ 2969cc I-6

Powertrain:
7 speed auto

Power:
367 Bhp@6300 rpm\ 306 Bhp@5800 rpm

Audi TT, Mercedes Benz SLK and Nissan 370Z

The Catch:
Rs 58 lakhs and above
