Like the Volkswagen Beetle, another iconic car always looming at the back of my head is the Porsche 911. When it was announced in 2007, that Porsche are coming down to India, I thought that they would really be setting up a factory here and would be giving out all those cars at a Mercedes E-class or BMW 5 series price. I was only half right. The starting price of the only one or two car would be similar to the aforementioned cars. The rest all are stratospherically priced for their lack of utility. Porsche’s innings in India has been met with moderate success. All their models have a virtue of sporty character but low on ergonomics since they are all based on sports car models. Classic example is the recently launched Porsche Cayenne and the high flying sedan, the Porsche Panamera S in India. Porsche India, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group have been a quiet operator in India. This is because all they have is high end cars or a SUV which many cannot afford to buy. However if some one does buy one of those, then he or she would be a celebrity in their own right. However it was high time that Porsche India got a diesel engine for their highest selling model in India, the Porsche Cayenne. This was recently rectified when Porsche India did the unthinkable with the Porsche Cayenne diesel launched in India.
