Autonomous Driving Software Showcased by Volvo

Volvo has come out with something called IntelliSafe Auto Pilot, which is a term for an autonomous driving software that the company has developed. The software uses a combination of laser sensors, radars and cameras to read road situation ahead of the car and take actions accordingly.

The autonomous software will take over the reins from the driver when the car enters an autonomous driving lane. Paddles mounted on the steering wheel will light up when the car reaches that section of the road. This system has already been seen in the Volvo XC90 SUV.

In order to turn the system on, the driver needs to have his hands placed on the paddles for a particular amount of time after which the system gets turned on and it takes over driving of the car till the end of the driving lane. Once it reaches the end of the section, the system sounds an alarm for 1 minute so that the driver can take control of the car. If for some reason the driver fails to take control of the car, the system will stop the car.

Volvo will test this system extensively in 2017 and plan is to equip 100 odd XC90s with this. By the year 2020, Volvo planning to launch its first car equipped with this software.

In India the XC90 is being offered in two variants – the Momentum and the top end Inscription. Volvo Aiming for 10% of the Luxury Car Market Pie in India

Swedish carmaker Volvo is aiming to corner 10 percent of the luxury car market in India by 2020. In order to fulfill this target, the company is planning to launch four new cars in the country in the coming years. According to Volvo officials, the company last year sold 1200 cars in India and grew by almost 30 percent. It aims to keep that curve going upwards in the years to come.

Incidentally India is one of the fastest growing markets for Volvo. But even with that 30 percent growth rate of last year, the company currently has only 4.5 percent of the luxury car market in its kitty. It is currently in the process of expanding its footprints in the country through the dealerships and showrooms. Recently Volvo had opened its first dealership I Kolkata.

Volvo Aiming for 10% of the Luxury Car Market Pie in India

Currently Volvo offers V40 cross, V40 hatchback, XC 60 SUV and the XC 90 seven-seater luxury SUV. Recently the company had launched the S60 in India. According to Volvo India Managing Director Tom von Bonsdorff, the company is aiming to achieve the same level of competitiveness in the Indian market like its German counterparts – Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi etc – both in terms of pricing as well as market value. The company in the coming days will launch 3 to 5 new models along with a few facelifts and will take its dealership strength to 20.

Volvo S60 T6 Petrol Launched In India; Priced At Rs. 42 Lakhs

Priced at Rs. 42 lakhs, the all-new Volvo is set to compete with the likes of Mercedes Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series.

Motivation for S60 comes from a 2.0 liter T6 engine, which is good for pumping out 306 horsepower with 400 newton meters of torque. The engine is mated to 8-speed automatic FWD transmission. The vehicle comes standard with 18 inch alloy wheels and interior with wood and leather-finish sports seats, navigation, ABS and six airbags. Also, the adaptive digital display will supply the driver with personalized information, in addition to choice of three themes: Eco, Performance and Elegance.

Some of the technology features include MP3 coder, with DVD player in other variants, single-CD player, Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted audio controls. Mr. Tom Von Bonsdorff, Managing Director at Volvo Auto India said: “India is one of the fastest growing markets for Volvo. An array of recent launches – V40 Cross Country petrol, XC90, V40, and now the S60 T6 petrol, will add a positive thrust to the brand’s presence in India.”

He also said that Volvo Auto India won’t be participating in the Delhi Auto Expo next year.

Volvo V40 Hatchback Launched For Rs 24.75 Lakh

If the V40 Cross Country of Volvo isn’t of your taste, here is another option to look for. The V40 hatchback which India was eyeing long back is finally launched for a starting price of Rs 24.75 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi.

In terms of segmentation, V40 Cross Country is the crossover sibling of V40 hatchback with the raised height and added gimmicks, which the hatchback had shed to compete the likes of BMW 1-Series and Mercedes A-Class. New paint scheme, darkened front grille and air dam, no body cladding and lowered height are some traits that are owned by the new car which differentiates it against the Cross sibling. Panoramic glass roof and new alloy wheels add some more details to it. In fact, Swedish carmaker had made available two variants of standard V40 across the sales floor – Kinetic and R-Design, where each of them are powered by a D3 diesel engine of 147bhp mated to a six-speed auto transmission. ABS, airbags – front, side, curtain and pedestrian, and traction control are the standard features available alongside the mood lighting, powered front seats with memory, dual zone climate control, and parking sensors.

Thus, the only benefit of buying a Volvo in India is its unmatched quality standards, because the cars are imported directly into the country as a CBU (completely built unit). And this new hatchback V40 no exception will get imported from Belgium. In the time when every carmaker at the top of line from Germany are going the ‘Make in India’ way, Volvo sticking to CBU route is still interesting to look at.

Prices of Volvo V40 Hatchback:

Volvo V40 Kinetic – Rs 24.75 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

Volvo V40 R-Design – Rs 27.7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
