With the sales growth of 3% in 2009 and bagging one of the most prestigious award Indian cars of the year 2011 for it's scintillating Model Ford Figo, Ford India Private Limited has turned out to be the sixth largest car maker in India. A wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motors, an American company, it has clearly demanded its place somewhere in the heart of India. With their manufacturing unit in Maraimalai nagar 45 kms away from Chennai, they started their production in 1996. Though it was back in 1907 when they launched their first 'Model A' in India but it didn't work out. Then again in 1926 they started their production, this time with a manufacturing unit in India but it failed again due to some unpredictable reason. But they stroked back when they were offered a 50 - 50 partnership deal from Mahindra & Mahindra in 1954. Soon, they claimed a 72 percent stake and became a full fledged Ford India Private Limited in 1996.

Some of the models (Escort, Mondeo and Fusion) they launched didn't work out on the Indian terrain and hence has to be discontinued soon after their launch, but then there were some of the models which became a household name, the Ford Ikon launched in 1999, Ford Endeavour in 2004, Ford Fiesta in 2005 and the recent and the best by far (which the whole country is aware of) Ford Figo. They expect 2011 to be their turning point as they have already increased their production from 100000 to 200000 vehicles and 250000 engines, and some further plans which include the increment of their dealership from 167 to 200 in 97 cities. They are also launching and re-launching their few models under which, the much awaited one is the Ford Mondeo which is supposed to be launched in April 2011. Ford afficinados would love to get their hands on the improved version, with better interiors and engine options.. The other two new models to be launched are Ford Splash expected somewhere in June 2011 and Ford Focus in July 2011.
