Established in 1945, Tata Motors limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tata Group. Tata group was formarly known as the Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO). TELCO is the first Indian engineering company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. With 24,000 employees, Tata Motors is amongst the top three passenger car manufacturing companies in India. In the fiscal year 2009-2010, by consolidating total revenue of Rs 92,519 crores, Tata Motors became the largest automobile company in India. There are almost over 5.9 million Tata vehicles plying on the roads of India from the time the company initially started. Tata Motors is expanding its horizons internationally as well, as the company has already established its name since it started exports in the year 1969. Currently the company has manufacturing plant almost all over India namely Jamshedpur, Pune, Lucknow, Pantnagar and Dharwad, as well as internationally in South Africa, Thailand and Argentina. And the company is set to launch its new manufacturing plant in Sanand in Gujrat.
Over the years, Tata Motors Limited has acquired many companies in India as well as overseas. In 2004 Tata Motors claimed Daewoo's truck manufacturing unit in South Africa which is now named as the Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle. In 2005 Tata Motors Limited set up a joint venture with Fiat Automobiles in India to produce both Tata and Fiat cars. Then in 2007, Tata offered a partnership deal to Marcpoplo Motors of Brazil which in response made the Marcopolo low floor buses available in India. In 2008. Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover in England. The latest news in Tata Motors is that, it has acquired the Italian engineering company Trilix. Currently Tata Motors produces almost everything from passenger vehicles to the military vehicles. Under the passenger vehicle category, current vehicles of Tata Motors are Tata Aria, Tata Venture, Tata Indica, Tata Indigo Manza, Tata Nano, Tata Sumo Grande, Tata Safari, Tata Indigo E-cs, Tata Indigo Marina, Tata Ace and the Tata Xenon in India.
