Most of you who got attracted by the rising door of this sports coupe, are not even aware of the name Melkus. Coming from Dresden, Germany, the specialty sport car maker was founded by race driver Heinz Melkus, after whom the company was named. He built sports cars between 50’s to 80’s and in 90’s, his son Peter re-opened the shop.
Currently, the company has just one model to its name, the RS2000. After polishing its sole model in 2011, Melkus goes black with its special edition to keep the momentum going. However, this is no ordinary paint job, according to Melkus, it’s a special black lacquer finish that requires six layers with each layer being sanded separately. Now that’s called attention to details. In addition, the exterior upgrades also include a carbon-fiber bodykit.
Melkus took the term black a bit too seriously, with the black theme continuing inside on the leather seats and Alcantara interior roof lining. Also featuring are numerous piano lacquer, carbon fiber applications, and a new infotainment system with navigation function.
Don’t even start wondering how fast this black edition sports car can take you. Powering the RS2000 Black Editions is either Volkswagen or Opel based 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 325hp, just 25 horses more than the standard RS2000. Also sporting is high-performance braking system.
Mated with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the RS2000 Black Edition can do 0-100kmph in 4.5 seconds, impressive for a small engine. However, the car’s top speed is 270kmph.
And for all this, Melkus RS2000 comes with a price tag of $195,600, which in Indian Rupees is this figure- Rs 95,96,035.
