Hatchbacks will not be able to retain the 70% share in the Indian auto market that it currently holds. The 2012 Delhi Auto Expo has provided this ironic insight to the future of the Indian automobile industry, particularly in reference to the hatchbacks. Though this segment seems to be very strong at this moment, the inference can be made from the fact that only 5 or 6 conventional fuel operating hatchbacks have been freshly launched or unveiled by the 18 auto manufacturers that have participated at the Delhi Auto Expo.
The focus is slowly shifting to vehicles belonging to other segments in the Indian automobile industry. This includes the MPV, SUV and in particularly those cars that are solely powered by electricity or are hybrid variants that have the presence of electric motors along with the conventionally operating petrol or diesel engine. These new concept cars have dazzled at the Expo owing to the rich technology that they have been provided with. Hence, they have been able to achieve prime focus in the eyes of the automobile enthusiasts, who have frequented this Auto Expo, as the people have been able to witness technologies that they could have never perceived in their wildest imaginations.
The number of small cars or hatchbacks that have been offered at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo can literally be counted on your fingers. The cars that have been showcased include the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S from BMW, the Chevrolet Sail, the 2012 variant of the Volkswagen Beetle, the CNG variant of the Tata Nano and the Liva Sports from Toyota. Among the six cars mentioned here, the last two happen to be concepts.
If, however, if we try to take a look at the number of MPVs or SUVs that have either been unveiled or launched at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, the list of cars is expected to be significantly long and is going to merit a much longer if all the products listed are taken up individually. However, there have been some very prominent models that have been showcased at this edition of the Auto Expo that need to be mentioned due to the sole reason that all these cars have managed to be show stealers. Prominent in the MPV segment has been the Ertiga from Maruti Suzuki. The Ford EcoSport has also made a lot of hearts skip. A strong presence has also been recorded by the Safari Storme from Tata Motors. The Tata Pixel also commands its presence in the limited list of cars that we are referring to here solely because of the fact that it has taken automobile technology to all new levels. The Tata Pixel is, in fact, able to make a strong statement to the global market on the aspect of the huge growth in technology that India has been able to achieve, in the field of automobile engineering.
