The finalists for the World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Green Car, World Car Design of the Year were announced at the Geneva Motor Show, and its neck and neck between the three finalists in each category.
The winners will be announced at New York Auto Show due next month. World Car Steering Committee appointed 66 experienced and influential journalists from 25 countries to vote for each category. Recent years have seen a success of hatchbacks with winners of World Car of the Year as follows:
- Mazda2 – 2008
- VW Golf – 2009
- VW Polo – 2010
- Nissan Leaf – 2011
Previous winners include Lexus LS460 in 2007, BMW 3-Series in 2006 and Audi A6 in 2005.
Nominated cars for the World Car of the Year title have been shortlisted from 34 vehicles. Criterion for being nominated as World Car is that the cars should be available on sale in at least two continents during the period starting January 1, 2011 and ending May 30, 2012.
