Epic Road Trip of the Millionth Land Rover Discovery

The fourth generation of mid-size SUV, with off-road capabilities, Land Rover Discovery has got its Millionth built unit. It’s ready to roll out for an Epic road-trip across 13 countries in 50 days, covering 8000 miles from Birmingham to Beijing, which is rapidly growing to be its huge market. This trip aims at raising 1 Million GBP for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The landmark Discovery, which has been built in the Solihull Plant, will reach China on 23 April 2012 before the Beijing Motor Show begins. This should definitely give the popular auto show a big boost.  An experienced team of four will be tackling this long “journey of Discovery” through all weather and all kind of terrains. The Land Rover Discovery 4 has a 3.0 Liter SDV6 Turbocharged and intercooled Diesel Engine with 8 speed automatic gearbox, which produces 255HP. The Maximum speed is 112 mph (180kmph). The car accelerates from 0-60 mph (0-100kmph) in just 8.8 seconds (9.3 seconds). This should explain why discovery has received more than 200 awards across the world.

This is a significant accomplishment for the automobile industry of UK, with Discovery’s global sales going up by 16 per cent this year, with 83 per cent of the production being sent as exports to its 170 markets worldwide from its West Midland’s manufacturing base. The Solihull plant had to increase its manpower by 20 percent in the previous six months, making a workforce of 5000 reach 6000 just to meet the raised international demand for the Land Rover.

23 years after Land Rover introduced Discovery’s original model, which was somewhere between the luxurious Land Rover and the rough Defender, it has made its own space in the market and now has become an international saga of success. The Land Rover Discovery is indeed one of the most realistic vehicles of the world right now. It can seat 7 people and has a luggage space of 2500 liters in it. The Discovery comes with a number of path-breaking technologies including the award winning Terrain Response System (TRS), which makes the vehicle adept and respond to changing terrains and driving conditions including sand and snow.

The one million GBP project is the most ambitious fund raising project of Land Rover till date. This will provide support to the IFRC and their water sanitation project in Uganda. During the start of the Discovery expedition, a few famous explorers and adventurers also showed up who used Discovery’s previous models in their expeditions. There were people like Bear Grylls, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Ray Mears, Monty Halls and Polar Explorer Ben Saunders. Indeed, Discovery is a vehicle made to handle the rough conditions of an exploration, and this expedition suits the purpose of construction of the Millionth piece.
