Mini Superleggera Will Enter Production, To Battle MX-5 In 2019

Following the positive response to Superleggera Vision Concept, which was unveiled at Concorso d’Elegance Villa d’Este, reportedly Mini is in the early stages of preparing the production version for 2019 debut. Now, when the boss says they are working on it, seems like we have a solid confirmation on the same!

Peter Schwarzenbauer BMW Board Member said: “We are now working hard to get it on the street. It’s an economically challenging project and there is no firm decision, but we have a lot of people here that are fighting for it.” While the Superleggera hasn’t got green signal yet, if reports are to be believed, it will feature a front wheel drive system along with 3- and 4-cylinder diesel and petrol powerplants.

That’s not all! We dug a bit deeper and found out that there’s a plug-in hybrid in the pipeline, which will use the same engine as BMW 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid. Motivation for the 2 Series comes from a TwinPower Turbo 1.5 liter engine, which is good for producing 136PS of power with 220 newton meters of torque. Also, the electric motor churns out 88PS with 165 newton meters. On sling front, expect some heavy influences from Superleggera including short deck and long nose. If everything goes according to the plan, the concept will be ready for market debut in 2019, battling with Mazda MX-5.
