The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization and Tata Motors recently inaugurated a dual fuel, eco friendly power generation facility at the Tata Motors’ plant in Pune. This facility was inaugurated by the MD of Tata Motors’ India operations, P.M. Telang; NEDO’s executive director, Sadao Wasaka; the MD of JFE Engineering Corp., Japan, Tetsuo Tsuyuguchi and the MD of JFE India, Katsutoshi Sakai. Many other senior dignitaries and officials also graced this event.
The plant was selected by the Indian government, the Japanese government as well as by NEDO for carrying out this project to develop power by using clean environment tech. A MoU was also signed by the Indian and Japanese governments, Tata Motors and NEDO to push this project.
Teams from NEDO and Tata Motors have been working in collaboration on this project for 2 years now. Two diesel electric 2.5MW power generators were identified to convert into generators of dual fuels, by utilizing diesel as pilot fuel and natural gas for their main fuel source. This initiative has achieved success in regards to operating diesel generators on light diesel and natural gas.
Tata Group has undertaken the initiative to decrease their collective carbon footprint. Replacing present liquid fuel to gaseous fuels which are clean burning will aid the company in reducing 3,770 tonnes of CO2 per annum, which will aid in decreasing the company’s carbon footprint.
