These pictures depict the first ones of the Volkswagen’s Up hatchback. This model is predicted to be the company’s highest seller and become a key component in Volkswagen’s plans to stamp its authority in world market by 2018.

Volkswagen also has plans to produce the Up for Indian market. The Volkswagen Up would be a four-door version in India and would be positioned slightly below the Volkswagen Polo. Staying true to its original concept, Up has a two-box silhouette, which is simple. Klaus Bischoff, Chief of Design, Volkswagen, said the layout provided enough space employed within the compact footprint and made the car suitable for driving in the city limits.

Distinctive features of the Volkswagen Up includes features like a front bumper that is large which has rectangular grille that are set low. It also has round foglights and headlights that are angular, all of which helps the Up to give a face that is more expressive than the recent Volkswagens. Furthermore, the design of upright stance in the Up points straight to an open cabin, which would suit families in India that are looking for a car in their budget. Wheel-arch flares that are distinctive uplift the car’s wide tracks giving more confidence to the car in the small-car sector.

Further speaking on the car, Volkswagen claim they were able to give the car quality levels of space interiorly through the wheelbase that gives the car ultrashort overhangs. Seating for four elders is optimally provided in the car. The car also offers about 251 litres of space for luggage and an extended 951 litres overall when rear seats are folded.

The Volkswagen Up, 2007, had a rear engine and a rear-drive layout. Martin Winterkorn, Boss of Volkswagen, iterated that car gave optimal packaging solution.  The new Up has a conventional transverse engine (front-mounted) and a drive architecture (front wheel), called MQB.

The Indian version of Volkswagen Up would get a new range of 1 litre to 1.2 litre diesel and petrol engines that are fuel efficient. Another challenge for the German car maker would be the pricing of these cars. The base version would currently be targeted at a price of Rs. 3 lakhs.

The car would be making its debut at the upcoming motor show in Frankfurt and would make its launch by 2013 in India.
