Mumbaikars will breathe a sigh of relief on June 14th. Yesterday, a vital and significant freeway got kicked off by the state’s CM, Prithviraj Chavan.

The highly anticipated Eastern Freeway, which is around seventeen kilometers (kms) long, and free of any signals, will significantly lessen journey time between South Mumbai – the country’s most significant financial region – and the Eastern suburban zones.

Previously, it was around sixty minutes drive from Chembur to the town’s major railway station, the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus or CST. But, after the opening of this new freeway, the commuters will have to spend just twenty minutes to reach CST.

In addition, the new freeway will also offer the much required prompt connectivity from the Island city to the eastern suburban areas to Pune, Navi Mumbai, Goa as well as Panvel.

At present, travelers make use of the Eastern Express Highway.

The travelers will be permitted to make use of the initial phase (14 kilometers) of the new expressway from June 14. The production work of the freeway got commenced in the year 2008.

The administration has expended around 1250 crores on this huge project. There has been much debate over the postponement in kicking off the expressway for travelers.

India's second longest flyover

According to the reports, the state administration has waited for more than ten days for a central Congress head to open it.

But with no one available from the national capital, Maharashtra’s CM Prithviraj Chavan kicked off the new freeway. The venture throws statistics, which will turn Mumbaikars automobilists glad.

State administrative representative stated that the Eastern Freeway is one of the projects totaling Rs 60,000 crore in progress to improve the city’s transportation system.
