The Indian giant, Tata Motors is considering to localize the assembly of its Jaguar luxury cars in coming three to five years.

“We are looking at it, but volumes in India are very small now. As we go forward, we will surely consider this,” Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar Global Brand Director was quoted saying.

At present, Tata provides platform at its Pune facility for the assembly of Freelander, the Land Rover luxury SUV.

Regarding the timeframe the company needs for localizing the assembly, Hallmark said: “We have not planned anything right now, but in the next 3-5 years, we can imagine this happening in India.”

As of now, there is no detail on the location of assembly, its capacity or the models that will be assembled at the plant. The Tata-owned luxury brand reported steep growth in sales in Indian market during 2010-11 fiscal, with the total sales of both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles counting to 891 units, compared to 242 units last year.

We recently brought to you the news of JLR evaluating the chances of localizing engine assembly, and this will be the first major investment of the British brand outside Europe.  While the UK plant demanded an investment of over 355 million pounds, the investment on the Indian facility is expected lesser.
