Hyundai i20 Active vs Toyota Etios Cross vs Fiat Avventura: Spec Comparison

‘Cross hatches’ or ‘hatchback-turned crossovers’, both terminologies are suitable to convey cars like Hyundai i20 Active, Fiat Avventura and Toyota Etios Cross. Taking every of them into account for a comparison, we studied who is the best bet on paper, and do they really have a grunt to go for the off-roads, or at least can handle the world-famous half-paved roads of India for the brutal sense they do create the lucrative promises.  Find out with us whether the Active i20 will be able to stand in line to those formerly introduced models in the acute market of 1000 units a month restricted to niche and premium set of buyers.

  • Engine

In the state of petrol, Fiat offers max power off the mid-sized engine. Toyota Etios Cross with two options (1.2L and 1.5L) tops the chart with largest displacement and power, but ironically the small unit pulls it down on the list. And needed to push the car off the line first, it’s the Etios offering max torque, whereas Hyundai and Avventura compromised at a tie here.

Toyota Etios Cross

On the side of diesel, Fiat gets fixed by shortest engine, but it sends max power off that small machine. Hyundai didn’t managed to attain the top position in power delivery, but it will set you straight off the launch with its chunk of torque. Toyota in the diesel guise do not performed well. The huge machine of 1.4L lacked a way back in either of the plots.

  • Fuel-Efficiency

On the fuel-efficiency, Fiat lacks in both the fuel options. It’s Toyota to deliver more kilometres from a single litre of diesel, whereas the petrol’s performance wasn’t too bad either. Hyundai Active’s figures aren’t disappointing either.

  • Fuel Economy as per ARAI    Hyundai i20 Active    Toyota Etios Cross    Fiat Avventura
  • Petrol     17kmpl    17.71kmpl/16.78kmpl    14.4kmpl
  • Diesel    21.19kmpl    23.59kmpl    20.5kmpl

  • Dimensions

Emerging as the clear winner, Hyundai ranks on the top of all with regards to length, width, height and wheelbase. On the other side Fiat which had fallen short on every aspect despite holding a spare wheel at the back, wins on the note of ground clearance for offering maximum than the rivals. Avventura to an extent envied some compact SUVs for sitting this high on the heels after being converted to crossover from a hatchback.

  • Overview

It’s Hyundai that packs more features and space for a comparatively bigger price tag. But for the built-quality Toyota has enticed Indians with sturdy machines carved by means of every quality measure known to Japanese. It’s the Fiat Avventura that has personally won our heart due to the tail-gate mounted spare-wheel, the only one to do so, and massive ground clearance like small SUVs.

Fiat Avventura, one more addition to the fray of hatchback turned crossover, is launched in India for a starting price of Rs 5.99 lakh ex-showroom Delhi (Petrol Active variant). The diesel trims starts at Rs 6.98 lakh.

Over the changes made, Fiat’s crossover carried a standard spare wheel, raised ground clearance of 205mm and 16-inch wheels across all the variants.

Most of the cosmetic gimmick is drawn from the new hatchback Punto Evo. The nose is reworked and add-ons are placed over the bumper for a go-anywhere looks. The aluminum roof rails and scuff plate further add to that appeal. To make a brief note about the rear mounted wheel, it has its own bracket which has to be unplugged prior to opening the tailgate.

Inside the cabin, reworks are immense in numbers. Prominently, the dashboard gets a dual-tone treatment, compass and tilt meter for the off-roader appearance. Driver is treated with a peace of mind having dual-airbags at its bay and seat height adjustment. Rear seats can now be folded down in the ratio of 60:40 for the practicality purpose.

Alongside the Avventura, in the recent past, the Punto facelift was also found doing the testing activity at its best.

It can be taken into consideration, both these vehicles are sounding great importance to the Fiat for winning back the hearts of Indians, except it is currently enjoying the goodwill for the 1.3-liter Multijet diesel engine on a large scale.

Cosmetically the facelifted Punto will be having as cosmetic makeover only with the changes to be made on outers and as well as interiors, bringing it to the same cadre of recently launched Fiat Linea facelift. Under the hoods the existing powertrains namely 1.2- and 1.4-liter petrol and 1.3-liter diesel in two power states shall be on duty.

In fact, the choices of engines for Avventura remain undisclosed. Interestingly, the Avventura concept had a six-speed manual transmission at the Auto Expo.

Fiat Avventura Crossover Styled Hatchback Spotted

Fiat India’s third big launch for 2014 will be the Avventura crossover styled hatchback, which will be marketed with turbodiesel and petrol powerplants borrowed from the redesigned Grande Punto. It uses the same platform as the former and the same holds good with the interiors. Nonetheless, the vehicle gets butch looks, which result from a major style makeover.

Unlike Fiat Grand Punto, the Avventura gets ground clearance of over 200 mm, 16 inch wheels, roof rails, body cladding, a spare wheel mounted on the hatch lid and revised rear and front bumpers. It will sit in the crossover-styled hatchback segment, which currently plays host to the Toyota Etios Cross and the Volkswagen Cross Polo.

A key change on the production version of Avventura, when compared with the concept version showcased at 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, is the omission of daytime running LEDs. This change apart, the production version of Avventura looks quite similar to the concept version and the vehicle is likely to be introduced in India before September 2014. However, the redesigned Fiat Grande Punto will precede the Avventura into India. The B+ class hatchback borrows styling cues such as grille and headlamp design from the Avventura.

The Fiat Avventura offers two engine choices: the FIRE 1.4 liter petrol engine that’s rated at 89 horsepower with 114 newton meters of torque and the Fiat Multijet 1.3 liter turbodiesel engine, which is good for producing 92 horsepower with 209 newton meters of torque. A variable geometry turbocharger is expected to be available in the Avventura. Both these powerplants already do duty on the Linea and Punto, and are therefore tried and tested units.

The Avventura is expected to be priced about Rs. 50,000-60,000 higher as compared to equivalent variants of the redesigned Grande Punto, and the vehicle will be aimed at B+ segment hatchback shoppers who want the looks of a crossover but who’re unwilling to fork out the extra money, for example Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport.

Fiat Avventura Spied Testing in India

Fiat Avventura is on the top of list of the most awaited cars to be launched in India at moment. The set of spy-shots published here is going to get the aspirers jump out of joy. Caddied in oodles of camouflages, the Fiat Avventura is doing test rounds in full-fledge with all the equipments loaded.

The test mules are three in numbers and are of white in color.

On the designing note, Fiat Avventura is a crossover version of hatchback Punto added with the spare wheel on rear and plastic cladding on sides.

There could be changes made on headlamp, bumper and front grille for distinguishing both the models of brand.

Skoda (Fabia Scout) and Volkswagen (Cross Polo) are the two models available in market of the same category. Toyota Etios is also a recent addition to the list.

Besides, swinging tailgate, roof rails, and diamond-cut alloys will be seen employed on Avventura too.

Under the hoods it could be the very famous Fiat’s own 1.3-liter Multijet diesel engine producing either 75 PS or 90 PS, depending upon the state of tune applied by the engineer. On the other side of pond, Fiat will either use a 1.2-liter or a 1.4-liter petrol engine for the petrol heads. Though using the 1.4-liter engine, seen on the Punto, will push it to the category of ‘mid-size’ car, and hence resulting into higher taxes too. Decision still seems pending which one of the combination will suit best.
