2016 Mercedes Benz A-Class Facelift Officially Revealed

We are sure the Audi RS3 Sportback enjoyed its reign at the top of hatch horsepower charts. However, now Mercedes Benz has updated its a-Class so that it reclaims the throne, castle and the jewels. How? Well, the 2016 Mercedes Benz A-Class has been officially revealed with a significant bump of 36 horsepower (now 381HP) and an increase of 18 pound feet of torque (now 350 lb-ft.)

Even in this era of emissions regulations, ever-present fuel economy and engine downsizing, the power wars are alive. The redesigned A45 was recently revealed at Goodwood Festival of Speed ahead of formal debut at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show. Well, while there aren’t any plans to launch the A-Class in America, you will get to see plenty of changes in GLA and CLA models.

 

Modifications to suspension, transmission, design, appointments and electronics have turned the 2016 Mercedes Benz A-Class into a fully new vehicle that’s good for pumping out 381 horsepower with 475 newton meters of torque. It can reach 100 kilometers from standstill in 4.2 seconds. A lot of others areas of the vehicle have been optimized. The Dynamic Select Driving modes – Individual modes, Sport +, Sport and Comfort; redesigned gear ratios and aerodynamic fine-tuning – all help boost performance.

The engine is teamed up with a 7-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all the four wheels. More stability, more dynamism – the influences from motorsport are immediately apparent in the 2016 Mercedes Benz A-Class with front skirt in A-wing design, AMG specific cooling air inlets, LED high performance headlights with eyebrows, daytime running lights, striking spoiler lip in diffuser and four vertical fins.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Facelift Spied For The First Time

A-Class and B-Class are the two hot-cashing points of Mercedes-Benz, where the latter has received a facelift at Paris Motor Show 2014, now it is the turn of smaller Merc to gain a slice of makeover.

Hopefully, the German automaker is seemed on the right track, and our spies of industry have revealed the first spy-shots of hatchback doing rounds in camouflaged avatar.

Spotting the changes, they don’t seemed many in numbers. The diamond grille on front replicates the model to be a A250 Sport, having power of 211hp from a 2.0-liter engine with the traction sent to front wheels. It clocks 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds for 4Matic version, top-speed crossing the cap of 240km/h.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class Edition 1 Launched at Rs 26.17 lakhs & Rs 28.75 lakhs

Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class were the major stars of the German automaker in India as they fall low on pocket and had the capacity to kill many birds with a single stone. However, it was the petrol variants that scored more equipments and features in the earlier days of the launch. Now, with the launch of Edition 1 of A and B Class in the repertoire only in diesel variants, it is held to bridge the gap of the most aspired Mercedes cars in the country.

Launched the Edition 1 A-Class at Rs 26.17 lakh and B-Class Edition 1 at Rs 28.74 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Mumbai) these two newbies are adored only with the cosmetic changes rather than technical ones.

Confirming those changes, it can be noticed the black decals are found on the running board, Edition 1 badges on outer as well as interiors, black colored wing-mirrors, electrically-adjustable front passenger seat and the most desired panoramic sunroof now available. A Class Edition 1 also gets a 17-inch ‘Tremolite’ grey alloy wheels, whereas, the B-Class gets two 17.8 cm rear entertainment screens with a DVD player and infrared headphones – as the Mercedes-Benz wagon is still believed to be mostly driven by the chauffeurs in India.

Continuing the exclusivity further, Mercedes-Benz said only 100 units of A Class and B Class Edition 1 are available at the showrooms for the aforesaid price. Three exterior colors namely Cirrus White, Polar Silver and Jupiter Red can be bought.

Under the hoods both the cars specks the same technicalities with 2143cc In-line 4 cylinder diesel engine comprised of 109PS and 250Nm after mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission with traction transferred to the front wheels. Both the A-Class and B-Class now get raised ride height and slightly suppler setup to deal with our roads better.

On contrary, the A-Class and B-Class are contributing upto 20% of the Mercedes-Benz total sales in India, where it would be raised further with the launch of GLA in the coming months.

Plush hatchbacks had their own way to crave luster in the eyes of an onlooker, which now the Mercedes-Benz A-Class in India received black paint shade to do that job more lusciously.

Earlier, launched A-Class in colours namely white, red and grey, now, the addition of black had toiled the list slightly towards boys as well.  The black colored A-Class is only for diesel buyers.

The diesel hatchback of Merc is powered by a 2.1 litre four cylinder engine of 108.7PS power and 250Nm of torque, while the petrol trim uses a 1.6-litre four cylinder unit of 22.36PS and 200Nm of torque. Both of them mated with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. Petrol unit is claimed to do the 0-100kmph sprint in 9.2 seconds, whereas the diesel manages the cruise that distance on speedo in 10.6 seconds.

There are no changes made in the price, as it is available for Rs 26,48,696 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Race the ‘SLS AMG’ and then compare it with hatchbacks – sounds insane, and this is what the Mercedes Benz had proportioned to cater new segment of audience in India. No doubt that designing department had did their best to yield this sporty sort of tavern on the hatchback. Now it was the toughest part for interior designers to work out those Merc impressions on inside too.

Open the doors and settle yourself in the driving seat, yet for moments it will give a feel of the SLS AMG, as what the top brass of Mercedes Benz had though to drive while designing it – being as a core value-marketing quotient for the mass customer segment of A Class. Front seat are snug enough to be felt in the lap of AMG temperament. Both separated front seats are provided enough to bear the stretched legs of tall driver and passenger. Hopefully, this Merc is meant for the self-driven personnel, so the terms ‘driving position’ and the ‘co-passenger position’ are quite comfortable. But given with the low slung roof the headroom becomes cramped for the rear passengers. Small rear windows also add woes on the backseat. An ample of commanding buttons on the steering wheel, and if not enough then more of them on music player too, which are upped for matching the impressive Merc quality.  Number of storage compartments for the driver’s aide adds bits of convenience when self driving the A Class. Boot space is quite decent with 341 liters, but the spare wheel snatches off its convenient haziness in all the allure. One cannot lug much of the cargo in it despite the spare wheel has settled itself in its best possible compact form yet. The panoramic sunroof as a standard adds more value to the money.

On contrary, the only things that we had not felt had been planted as per the Mercedes Benz quality are manual adjustment of seat, and inferior quality insulation. The sounds enter the cabin so easily that at times we had not felt it is a Mercedes that is tentatively famous for the ‘cut-off from the world when sat inside’ quotient.

For the conclusion, we say interiors speak a lot about the driver’s position itself, and not much of the other passengers. And being a self-driven car, A Class is the least concentrated on the rear seating arrangement too.

Rating: 5/10.

Performance:

Performance for the A180 CGI comes from 1595cc, 4-cylinder petrol motor that sends out 122 HP @ 5000 RPM and 200 Nm @ 1250-4000 RPM. It is clearly visible when you the dab the paddle with your foot. And the icing on the cake for ‘performance section’ is the 7-speed DCT automatic transmission which is operated via pedal shifter, so no need to keep your left hand busy at all the time. This makes the city driving more comfortable than before. The short throw of gear also leaves you on the 100kmph very shortly, and easily too. It is all effortless to drive in slow city traffic, ample of acceleration and the car moves forward desirably. But to move past the other vehicles on highways, one needs to keep his car above the 3500RPM, that’s exactly where the turbo works in favour. Even if the pointer is directed down the 3.5K rpm, then down pedal shift is the answer to jazz up the car quickly. However, pedal shift is the one which has taken us luring around its bay very spontaneously and more to it the gearbox is also user friendly with smooth and slick transmission.

Another surprise to the A Class is the gearbox again. Mercedes Benz had planted it with three modes namely Economy (E), Sport (S) and Manual (M). All these modes can be flickered at any given point of time using the pedal shift. Sports mode is made for the aspiring generation who wants to stay on redline “always”, while the economy mode is given to derive the fuel efficiency at its best.

Ride and Handling:

As we said a lot about the ride in above stanza, to specifically pin-point again, city driving was pleasurable, and the highway too wasn’t disappointing. Based on the MFA platform, A Class is one of the best vehicles to drive out on those wide arrays of roads. The steering is sharp and accurate. It takes one exactly wherever one directs it. The lightweight body and responsive steering wheel is enough cruise at highway on high speeds for all day long. And push hard, A Class doesn’t tend to bent you with the ‘understeer’ very easily. And as we had said the designers had made a lot of efforts to make A Class what it standing now, driving the same gives a feels for it too. At times when the engine shortcomings start entering the driving bay then the robust design of car takes in the shape and drives out the dwindling confidence with powerful brakes. They are on the best disc and caliper assembly that we had seen on this type of car anytime back.

Handling is also excellent too. Power to weight ratio also contributes a bit to yell out the lump on cornering but at times in high speed it hadn’t responded the way it was desired. One can swiftly finishes up the turning patches with better maneuverability and can end up eating miles due to beefy straight line acceleration. There is one more disturbance to the car, and that is the thick A pillar which obstructs the view for all of us. It is the only negative in ergonomics of driver which hadn’t fared well on our list, lest was up to the mark to derive further course of action, i.e. suspension check.

Suspension dominatingly had taken away all the brownie points that the A Class had garnered in the previous stanzas. Due to the short complexion, it can easily eat up the small bumps, but when it comes to the larger ones, the result is worst ever in case for being a Mercedes. It also filters a lot of thud in the cabin that one gets fed up while driving continuously on it for longer than usual. Even we suggest look for the larger speed breakers too. Sitting very shortly in the height, it can crash its belly against the tumbled bump if driven carelessly over it.

Meanwhile, the negative that we had faced in the ride and handling is the less powered engine; it is needed to be beefed up than what it is now. And suspension quality was also extremely poor when compared to other of the three pointed star models.

We were hoping the astonishing number of ponies garnering our drive under the hood, but disappointingly we had got to say those expectations had been shattered on the floor.

Mercedes Benz India had hiked the price of B Class to make the launch of A Class more efficient. The A seems to be the much anticipated product for three pointed star in India and hence for playing safe it had increased the price of its earlier cheapest MB (i.e. B Class) by almost Rs. 3 lakh.

Following the launch, the base variant of B Class that was earlier tagged at Rs. 21.5 lakh is now notched to Rs. 24.3 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), almost by a sum of Rs. 3 lakh; must say, a strategic move for getting the actual ‘A’ from A Class (sales).

Whereas, the niche hatchback (i.e. A Class) is already done with the oil burner, but the compact sports tourer (i.e. B Class) is still waiting to get the same, which we say may derive at the end of this month or so.

Hence, B180 derives the maximum of 122PS of power and 200Nm of torque from the 1.6L displacement, but yet official words are still there to erode from the German stable for striking confirmation on the new fuel trim.

A for Adrenaline, A for Attack, A for Awesome, and now the Mercedes Benz says A for A Class to India. This is what the Germans have positioned their newbie all around. Compact, powerful, stylish and yet futuristic, are the words that we have uttered when saw this bug on the launch pad. In the era of changing scenario, when the youths are preferring to drive their vehicle on own, BMW and Audi already rolled out their product in India for this respective segment, Mercedes Benz as a late entrant now made debut with its A Class, compressed in the version of 1.6L petrol and 2.2L diesel, both given away with 4 cylinders each.

Naming them, it was learnt the petrol version is tagged as A 180 Sport whereas the oil burner as A 180 CDI Style. Mercedes to bring A Class on May 30th

Mercedes-Benz is all geared up for the launch of its New A Class in India on May 30th. Unlike most of the Mercedes cars already in the market, this new car is not the one you will want to be chauffeured.  With the racky profile and the sporty roofline the car mostly targets the owners who want to drive their own Mercedes.

Mercedes All Set To Roll Out ‘A’ Class On May 30th

As per fresh reports, Mercedes Benz is ready to roll out its brand new A-class in the Indian market on May 30th.

The new A class Mercedes will become the second launch during the month of May, as the auto giant is readying to roll out the innovative ‘GL Class’ on May 16th.

As per reports, the company is likely to carry out a personal preview of its new offering (A Class) for traders and select clientele on May 4th. The progression of the vehicle introduction appears to be a wise step as the company would be eyeing to maintain its recently attained No. 2 spot in the country’s luxury vehicle market.

Adding seriousness to all these declarations, the automobile company has begun placing images of the much awaited vehicle via its social networking site’s (Facebook) page and Twitter handle.

Mercedes small four-door coupe dubbed CLA : Beijing debut

Mercedes will introduce its next four-door coupe built on the MFA platform that underpins the A-Class and B-Class at the Beijing Motor Show. Christened the CLA, the concept is different from the production ready CLC coupe that will make its Los Angeles debut next month. Mercedes describes this baby CLS to be the fifth platformed on the MFA.

Reports suggest that the CLA will take up the position below the C-Class as an entry-level sedan. With this, the German luxury carmaker continues striving for its low-cost small car. Mercedes will give a choice of sub-150 hp petrol and diesel variants for the CLA. Also, expect Mercedes to develop a 300 hp top of the range version with AMG tuned hybrid power plant. It will feature as both front and all-wheel-drive mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Production of the CLA will be at the Hungary plant with the first batch arriving late 2012.
