Volvo has added a new diesel engine to its big vehicle lineup as a part of 2013 model year upgrades, which also bring new features and more optional safety technology. The 2013 models include Volvo V60, S60, S80 and V70, all of which are set for production this May and will be powered by an all-new 5-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel powerplant called D3. The engine is good for pumping out 100KW of power with 350 newton meter of torque, returning average carbon dioxide emissions as low as 114 grams per kilometer in S80 and S60 saloons, translating to a fused cycle fuel efficiency rating of around 4.3 litres per 100km.

The present D3 2.0 liter 5-cylinder diesel powerplant generates 120kW of power with 400 newton meters of torque and will be rebadged D4 under the new naming structure. The D2 4-cylinder 1.6-litre DRIVe diesel powerplant is an entry level option and churns out 84kW of power with 270 newton meters of torque. On the other hand, the 5-cylinder 2.4 liter engine, dubbed D5 is good for pulsating 158kW of power with 440 newton meters of torque.
