Peugeot gives a flashback to the 80’s with the unveiling of the Peugeot 208 GTi. The hot hatch will be unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show next month.

Not too long ago, Peugeot had announced it would make a comeback in the hot-hatch section, and the new 208 GTi is what marks their return, making a centerpiece at the Geneva Motor Show.

Thought not purely retro like the 205 GTi, the new Peugeot 208 GTi brings back hot hatches with its short, light and powerful concept. Peugeot lost the charm in its hatchbacks after the 205 GTi, but the new 208 GTi, previewing a production version about a year away, shows it got what it takes to get back the charm.

To start with, Peugeot put a 1.6 litre twin cam turbocharged engine. This engine, also seen in RCZ coupe, churns upto 200bhp and generates a torque of 275Nm. This motor is mated with a six-speed manual transmission. We can also hope the car adopts the smart handling features from the RCZ. Apart from under the hood, the new GTi also runs on wider track compared to the regular 208 and offers 18-inch wheels.

Also following the retro GTi styling is the GTi badge, which is proudly positioned on the rear quarter panels. The front grille resembles the checkered flag with the lower grille bar displays the French tricolor flag or the Union Jack. On the rear, the GTi features double-chromed exhaust tailpipes and lower spoilers.

For the interior, Peugeot provides the new GTi with Nappa leather. The steering is also leather with contrasting red stitching. The dashboard is finished with alcantara, the roof lining is black and the pedals are aluminum, complimenting the sporty concept.

The 208 also cuts down 100kg from its predecessor and a 6cm front overhang, while providing better interior space and improved crash strength.

Sales of the mainstream 208 range will begin in UK in June, and we can expect this regular 208 to come to India. However, there is no hope of seeing the hot-hatch GTi any time in near future.
