Hyundai i20 Active Review – First Impression

Nothing can come close to a hatchback as big as Hyundai i20 Active, that’s what a one of the spectators uttered on seeing this car at a dealership. It too made us realize what had worked for the Hyundai despite this Active being based on the same platform of Elite i20. To our realization, we found the hatchback is improved on ground clearance and faced revamp on front grille with skid plate added underneath poses it beefier than before. Even more, those rounded fog lamps added stealth and chunkiness to the attire. Mentioned down is the whole review of what you can see on spotting a one of these on the roads, or apparently at one of your friends’ neighbor.

  • Exterior

Based on the same platform of Elite i20, the Active models gets skid plates, new bumpers, front grille, raised ground clearance of up to 190mm, plastic cladding on sides, new large fog lamps, daytime running lights, silver roof-rails and lots more on the list. Even not to mention the fuel-cap is redesigned.

Hyundai i20 Active Review

  • Interior

The cabin is directly lifted off the Elite i20, but a zing at color-play provided sporty attire. Black and orange for the darker paintjobs, whereas blue and black for the lighter options. And top-end variant turns exclusive with loads of features mentioning smart key, cooled-glove box, height adjustment for driver’s seat, sporty aluminum pedals, adjustable steering wheels (telescopic and tilt), rear AC vents, music system with Bluetooth connectivity, 1GB storage space and lots more. Orange trims on the gear-lever, around air-con vents and other spots favor it for a sporty car, where Active is just meant for the road and partly off-road experience.

  • Engine

In the engine bay, power options are given from a 1.2L Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine and 1.4L U2 CRDi diesel. The former machine sends the max power of 83PS @ 6000rpm along with 11.7kgm of torque @ 4000rpm after mated to a smaller 5-speed manual gearbox. The latter (diesel) is more powerful than the former, and sends us the generous amount of 90PS @ 4000rpm with 22.4kgm of torque between 1500-2750rpm form a six-speed manual. No automatic version launched yet. As per the figures of ARAI, petrol car delivers fuel-efficiency of 17.19kmpl whereas the diesel keeps its head up with the figures of 21.19kmpl.

  • Overall

Though, we haven’t driven it, but since our friends got this chance to slip onto the backside of its steering, it was pretty much clear from their faces, except for raised ground clearance the drive was nothing distinct than its Elite sibling.

Hyundai i20 Active vs Toyota Etios Cross vs Fiat Avventura: Spec Comparison

‘Cross hatches’ or ‘hatchback-turned crossovers’, both terminologies are suitable to convey cars like Hyundai i20 Active, Fiat Avventura and Toyota Etios Cross. Taking every of them into account for a comparison, we studied who is the best bet on paper, and do they really have a grunt to go for the off-roads, or at least can handle the world-famous half-paved roads of India for the brutal sense they do create the lucrative promises.  Find out with us whether the Active i20 will be able to stand in line to those formerly introduced models in the acute market of 1000 units a month restricted to niche and premium set of buyers.

  • Engine

In the state of petrol, Fiat offers max power off the mid-sized engine. Toyota Etios Cross with two options (1.2L and 1.5L) tops the chart with largest displacement and power, but ironically the small unit pulls it down on the list. And needed to push the car off the line first, it’s the Etios offering max torque, whereas Hyundai and Avventura compromised at a tie here.

  • Power     90PS    68PS    93PS
  • Torque     220Nm    170Nm    209Nm

Toyota Etios Cross

On the side of diesel, Fiat gets fixed by shortest engine, but it sends max power off that small machine. Hyundai didn’t managed to attain the top position in power delivery, but it will set you straight off the launch with its chunk of torque. Toyota in the diesel guise do not performed well. The huge machine of 1.4L lacked a way back in either of the plots.

  • Fuel-Efficiency

On the fuel-efficiency, Fiat lacks in both the fuel options. It’s Toyota to deliver more kilometres from a single litre of diesel, whereas the petrol’s performance wasn’t too bad either. Hyundai Active’s figures aren’t disappointing either.

  • Fuel Economy as per ARAI    Hyundai i20 Active    Toyota Etios Cross    Fiat Avventura
  • Petrol     17kmpl    17.71kmpl/16.78kmpl    14.4kmpl
  • Diesel    21.19kmpl    23.59kmpl    20.5kmpl

  • Dimensions

Emerging as the clear winner, Hyundai ranks on the top of all with regards to length, width, height and wheelbase. On the other side Fiat which had fallen short on every aspect despite holding a spare wheel at the back, wins on the note of ground clearance for offering maximum than the rivals. Avventura to an extent envied some compact SUVs for sitting this high on the heels after being converted to crossover from a hatchback.

Fiat Avventura

  • Overview

It’s Hyundai that packs more features and space for a comparatively bigger price tag. But for the built-quality Toyota has enticed Indians with sturdy machines carved by means of every quality measure known to Japanese. It’s the Fiat Avventura that has personally won our heart due to the tail-gate mounted spare-wheel, the only one to do so, and massive ground clearance like small SUVs.

Here, minus the competition, we are about to explain the feature list of Hyundai i20 Active, and how it suits the condition of competition in the present day scenario.

Hyundai i20 Active India Launch In March 2015

Hyundai getting aggressive with the launch of its i20 Active, sends the rendering of same via its official account for hinting the launch to happen soon in March 2015. Though, the date is not specified, but huge speculations goes with the event taking place in next month for the Elite i20 Active to stand against Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura, and VW Cross Polo.

Fluidic design language will be the major tool of Hyundai to hunt down rivals in the segment. For instance, some days back clear spy shots revealed, front grille will see a nimble change along with the bumper, fog lamps and more. A skid plate lures the front fascia to give a feel of a crossover from outside, which the plastic cladding sides also mimicking the same. Raised height, or ground clearance, is just expected from a vehicle of this category, otherwise all the done efforts may turn vague. However, the pricing of i20 Active is bound to be premium than the standard model, and will be positioned as a lifestyle product not a mass seller instead.

Well, going by the spy images there weren’t any signs of spare wheel mounted on tail gate, not even in the rendering it is motioned, missing out the most loved quotient for Indians from the i20 Cross. Hence, this must be brought to the notice of designers and shall be turned into reality, even as an accessory if not possible in the standard guise.

Though, it will be interesting to see how this Hyundai is going to fare against the odds of market conditions, which directly jumps to a compact SUV like Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster if left out from the hatchbacks proportion. Feel free to pen down your thoughts in the comments section below…
