Ford Endeavour is Big Daddy’s Lad: Used Car Review

At the time when it was launched almost a decade back, Ford Endeavour was the only full sized SUV in its range, giving a big blow to all the competitors at a very single stance. But at the time before its launch, Ford was dwindling on the very serious note, wasn’t having sufficient numbers in the sales report to show at headquarters in US for continuing their operations here for more days. Meanwhile, the launch of Endeavour happened and then things starts falling into the place properly one after the other. Grueling the looks of true American on the front grille, it brought in a large number of footfalls to the dealerships. We can safely term that, Ford had turned down the scenario of SUV industry upside down when it rolled this SUV from its sleeve on Indian shores. Post the roll-out till quite long, we hadn’t seen the American carmaker had assorted any of the famous personality for its endorsement, and even they weren’t also flushing out huge balances to the advertisement notes. Later on as the days passes by, it then started losing market shares, competitors initiated to barge in the respective segment of the SUV plethora, and the automaker too felt the need to change the technicalities for a better standing in the fraternity. The day we still remember, at one point of time, finally the Blue Oval carmaker had rolled in Bollywood Actor Suniel Shetty for SUV endorsements, all thanks to his muscular physique and the brawny appearance, clearly resembling the Endeavour in its true flavor. But one thing that we had noted for this bug was, it’s best buddy were the rich spoilt lads, which in layman’s language sounds, high maintenance and running cost. Given down with the international looks, that flair of extravagant maintenance and running cost was tended to be understood without any bargains.

Ford Endeavour

Before springing out to buy a one, let’s clear the clutter that drives power under the bonnet of this full sized SUV. Basically it was launched almost a decade before from today, but it still retains all the charms that one may not get in the price band of a new hatchback. The latest and recent model is not peculiar to this bespoken range but the previous editions may fall perfect in the category of boot-chopped bugs. However, its not be said that sibling of Toyota Fortuner can be bought in the pocket size of a hatchback if preferred Endeavour in the used segment, but it furs quite up to those expectations itself. The first version i.e. before 2007 boasts a 2.5L diesel jag, the makers then fiddled it with some sort of up gradations in 2007. Then in 2008 the 3.0L diesel was introduced for it which then again went under the knife in 2009 to get the automatic gearbox assimilated. Here in the price range of hatchback, one can get the 2.5L of model before 2009 and the one introduced after 2007. Specifically, the desired vehicle should be of the year between 2007-2009, not down or up than that. It too had a reason for preferring this particular plethora, because the engines before 2007 were not given with the injection and all. That 2.5L engine was optimizing only the average performance with the ‘conventional’ 2.5 liter displacement. Hence, no enjoyment of driving it with the flamboyant SUV looks just on the outer crisp. On the other side of flip, the model given after 2009 are bestowed with the 3.0L diesel employed with the automatic gearbox. If one lifts his foot from the accelerator then braking mechanism comes into force, and as an outcome the vehicle goes into the neutral mode automatically.

Coming to the exact point now, Ford Endeavour absorbs in whatever is thrown to it. Ride quality is also very decent, but if one compares it with the new comers of market then there are lacking too. Hopefully, it can be managed, not so big issue if you look into bracket of price asked. And yeah, the trump card is here, it is made available in both the version i.e. 4×2 as well as 4×4. The chassis that pins it underneath bolts down an old school feel which is called ladder frame. Due to it, the space at rear seats gets coughed up and the floor sits up than usual, making to feel a bit tad in rear seats for the persons with a tall personality. Short heighted will not face that fructification. Front seats are the comfortable place to be in. Comfortable seating positions, adjustable height on all variants and a decent amount of back support gives you a good feeling than the rear.

The vehicles that falls in our prescribed criteria possibly would be ticking out more than 1,00,000 kms on odometer. Very less of them tend to fall in the lesser ratings, but that is a tough job to find a one like that. Though if you still don the 0.1 million figures on dials, then make sure you had checked the turbocharger. In most of the cases, it happens turbocharger go out of order while running this much digits. Otherwise, be ready to shell out Rs. 62,000 for the replacement. The telltale signs like black smoke form exhaust, poor pickup and falling mileage are the secrets to rip off the actual condition of turbo. And as usual, other than this, the electrical issues had also been brought to our notice. Most probably frayed wirings create fuss for us. Malfunction light on instrument cluster, and some other minor issues also pelts up due to it, which may sound unnoticeable on looking at them but they are the ones that creates big trouble at times when not needed.  Replacement of the whole wiring will cost you a sum of Rs. 35,000 – 40,000. Then thinking of replacing the battery, make sure the ones that you are going to fit in your car is approved by Ford, otherwise you will get yourself in one-on-one position with things like sensor failure and the delayed relays on applications that runs solely on battery.

The next big thing that this bonk need to be checked precisely is by the clutch plate. The new ones costs Rs. 60,000 and to make a check for same, dab the paddle and if it feels stiff than usual then there is something fishy under its nose. It should be checked very often as the vehicle surpasses 50,000 kms of voyage. It is a common problem to arise after this much clocking. The next, but not that big, stratification is the suspension. If the rattle type sound is heard from rear suspension then it means definitely needed new leaf springs to shut down the disturbing sound. It costs Rs. 20,000 whereas the lower ball joint hovers for Rs. 13,600 and the front shock absorbers are for Rs. 9,300, tempting a lower arm at Rs. 17,000.

The above mentioned giggles are the core technical ones, but the following ones are a day to day running expense. The engine oil is arisen for Rs. 2,030 and the oil filter for Rs. 375. The air filter will ask you for the change of Rs. 1,485 but fuel filter will pull out Rs. 1,879 from your pocket. All that needs the service of a person for doing things properly, so be ready to pay him Rs. 2,470 for the service driven.

Engine oils and filter remain safe inside the bonnet when once fitted properly, but what about the outer clamps which are always prone to accidents and all. We say, they are the actual cost-drivers that stretch our monthly budget to the double digit of calculated figures. Hence on Ford Endeavour, a wing mirror is just fetched for Rs. 16,000 whereas the single head lamp will trim off yours Rs. 13,600 from the pocket. Tail lamp is a bit settled, it costs only Rs. 6,990 and if by chance you felt to replace alloys then the service center will ask you for not less than Rs. 17,000. Wait, the show stealer is still left, and that is none other than the rear spare wheel cover, which costs a whopping Rs. 26,000. The clocked odometer of 1,00,000 kms also needs a replacement of timing belt, but don’t worry it is only for Rs. 1,400 whereas the tensioner grim in for Rs. 6,800.

The efficient thing about the Endeavour is its ‘fuel economy’, because in spite of being this much big, it returns 9 and 12 kmpl in city and highway respectively under the guise of manual transmission. Yet the automatic transmission also pumps out better ones i.e. 7-10 kmpl from the city to highway rage. Making a note here, we just need to confirm that these above mentioned figures are clocked by us and it differs from vehicles to vehicles, their makes and the condition. To be true, two similar vehicle of same make may not deliver the same output, because the drivers behind the seats are far different than each other on various terms.

Making a clear cut division for you to understand, 3.0L capacity is available in the 4×4 automatic transmission whilst of the 2.5L in the 4×2 manual transmission. We say you to go for the manual transmission because that’s better than the other option available.

However, this product of Blue Oval is a costly affair but we say the ‘drive’ and other bits had enticed us the most. We too even neglected the maintenance cost when saw the performance at the price of a hatchback!

Ford Endeavour Alterrain Edition Launched at Rs. 19.11 Lakh

Ford Endeavour had changed the face of SUV segment in India at the time when it was launched. It marked the deep engraving impression on Ford’s image which now had became a benchmark in industry.

Standing tall with its masculine looks and a powerful grunting heart, Ford Endeavour had become a first choice of every Indian youth. Sporting the same attire since years, now Ford had tweaked a bit enough to compete strongly in this edge-cutting competition.

As of now, Ford launched the ‘alterrain’ edition of Endeavour at a cool price tag of Rs. 19.11 lakh, with only cosmetic changes and not the technical ones. On exteriors, new decals can be easily witnessed on hood with brand new aggressive front grilles. Both of them add red blooded masculinity epitome to the vehicle as being escorted by refreshed chrome plated 16” bold alloys.

In interiors, more concentration is given on driver’s posture as added with Shift-On-Fly transmission system on AWD traction, which allows easy switching between 2WD and 4WD. Steering rim is also upped with mounted controls. Overall temptation (of interior) seems draped in a new Majestic Molten colored scheme that breathes in a whip of freshness at every dip.

Ford Endeavour might just have got frightened due to newly launched Honda C-RV, as both of them are termed as rivals to an extent. So to play safe it has beefed up on all the aspects of precautionary measures.

Additional best deals for the month of May 2011

We come up with the deals for the month part and now another part which is regularly being updated is the additional deals of the month coming your way. This forms the crux where we actually scout the market looking for any best deals that manufacturers may be offering in the interests of better sales. This is done mid of the month and presented to you. So, here are some of the deals that we found out.

Volkswagen Passat :

The 2011 Volkswagen Passat has won over every competition that has been thrown at it since its launch a few days back. Moreover, unlike earlier times, Volkswagen have also ensured that they do the right kind of promotion for this big German and hence were a constant sight at the IPL matches as also various other promotional functions. Visibility is the key in this game and Volkswagen have played it well. The Volkswagen Passat has not only got some unheard of features in this class but also a panache which the others lack. Though there is no discount being offered on it, dealers are offering special schemes to customers of the older Passat and Jetta, for an upgrade to the new one.

Ford Endeavour :

Solid road presence, good amount of features, go anywhere ability and also a solid pricing ensure that the Ford Endeavour remains the hot favorite for shoppers in this category. On the base 2.5 liter diesel variant, Ford Motors are offering a discount of Rs 28k while the 4×4 variant which is more expensive comes with a Rs 32k cash discount. If you crib enough, most of the dealers would be more than willing to throw in another 5k to the ring. All this translates to about 2 percent savings on the on-road price of the vehicle. Since the Endeavour doesn’t boast of having a strong resale value, the discounts help in a big way. Ohh and this is a limited period offer and so hurry up with your cheque books to the nearest Ford show rooms.

Hyundai I10 :

An upfront cash discount of Rs 5k plus free insurance worth of Rs 25k means that the 2011 Hyundai i10 is a good deal as far as small cars go. Its all new avatar has been well received by the car buying public and to sweeten the deal, Hyundai have offered the aforementioned discounts. Moreover, if you are looking to exchange your current car at the Hyundai dealership for the I10, then you stand to gain an additional Rs 15k as exchange bonus.

Fiat Punto :

Fiat Motors got back on track in India with the Punto however with the advent of competition and the Punto still not receiving any update as far as design or engines go, it is but natural that Fiat have to resort to discounts to get this product moving out of the show rooms. Free insurance worth Rs 20k is been offered as a discount across both the petrol and diesel variants.

Skoda Laura :

The very bright star from the Skoda stables, the Skoda Laura has been doing brisk business for the Czech manufacturer. However due to poor service outlets, customers were not willing to buy the Laura. However to change that image, Skoda are offering a 3 years or 45k kilometers deal for free servicing which includes some of the consumables as well. This deal is worth Rs 30k and while you may not have any cash discounts, this deal would work in the longer run.

Tata Safari :

Come some months and the new Tata Merlin nee Safari will break cover. To clear the existing stocks, Tata Motors are offering a flat cash discount of Rs 10k on all the variants of the Safari plus an additional Rs 15k bonus is available for those looking to exchange their existing car at the Tata outlet. This amounts to a total saving of Rs 25k on the Safari variants.

SUV Buyers Guide within the Rs 25 lakhs budget

SUVs world over have been rebuked for depleting the Earth’s natural resources due to their gas guzzling habits however has anyone wondered why people still are crazy about buying SUVs? The very reason why people buy SUVs is because on a road, when you are trailing behind a car and if that person sees a SUV in his rearview mirror then he automatically gives way to it. I totally believe in SUVs and would rather go off track by saying that SUVs are the need of the hour. Don’t believe me? Just imagine how much fuel one would save by avoiding braking and waiting for others to give road? In this article, I have put through a SUV Buyers Guide in India within the Rs 25 lakhs budget.

Within Rs 7 lakhs budget –

No one would have thought of it, but there is a SUV available in India within the Rs 7 lakhs budget and if you do go in for the base version of this SUV, then within Rs 7 lakhs, you would have this SUV on-road. Well, it is the Premier Rio. Not a true blue SUV but it has all the essential elements that give it a SUV stance. The bad thing is that the Premier brand name has been blasphemized enough due to the Premier-Fiat debacle early on. There are three variants of this small SUV and LX variant which is available for Rs 6,33,979 (ex-show room, Mumbai) makes sense. If it’s a true blue off-roader SUV that you are looking out for, then it would be the Mahindra Thar CRDE top end variant which can be yours for this budget.

Within the Rs 10 lakhs budget –

There are two SUVs slotted into this segment and those are the Tata Safari and the Mahindra Scorpio. Of the two, in a recent comparison, I had picked up the latter over the Tata Safari. The very reason for this was that the Scorpio scored over the dynamics front a wee bit more than that of the Safari. Going for the top end Vlx model which is available for Rs 9.5 lakhs (ex-show room, Thane) is one of the safer bets. However suggestions are that one should rather wait as Mahindra are out to bring in more modifications and an entirely new look into the Scorpio in a few months time.

Within the Rs 10-15 lakhs budget –

In this price bracket comes the Skoda Yeti and the Mahindra Scorpio Vlx AT. I would heartily recommend the Mahindra Scorpio over the Yeti since it has an automatic transmission to boast of plus all the bells and whistles that come with the top end manual variant. The 4 wheel drive variant with airbags and auto transmission is available for Rs 1188400, ex-show room, Thane. The Yeti would come in as the second choice but then it doesn’t have an auto transmission. But it has all the necessary features that one can ask for plus seat 4 comfortably. It has got a bigger and more flexible boot than the Scorpio though.

Within the Rs 15-20 lakhs budget –

Soft roader category this is and here comes the first choice the Ford Endeavour. The Endeavour is a butch SUV which is available at a starting price of Rs 16.25 lakhs. It has got an auto transmission option and many more features compared to the others of its ilk. The Mitsubishi Pajero, a hardcore off-roader SUV is available in this budget as well. Buy it only if you can live with its dated interiors and you need to wade rivers everyday.

Within the Rs 20-25 lakhs budget –

Hell lot of options here and moreso most of them evenly matched. The pick of this lot, if it were to be for manual SUVs would be the Hyundai Santa Fe. The top end variant boasts of many luxurious features in its cabin plus excellent diesel fuel economy. Next up is the Toyota Fortuner, a towering SUV which has both decent on-road and off-road manners. Amongst the automatics, first up would be the Chevrolet Captiva TDCi . It is a diesel SUV with an automatic gearbox and nice interiors. Amongst the manual soft roaders, another name that crops up is the BMW X1, Imagine owning a BMW within the Rs 25 lakhs budget. The Honda CR-V also makes its presence felt as also the worthy Mitsubishi Outlander. You would be literally spoilt for choices in here. The very worthy Nissan X-Trail base variant makes a compelling case for itself here.

Ford cars at the Surat Auto Expo 2011 covered by Indiandrives team

One of America’s largest car manufacturer, Ford Motors were also present at the 2011 Surat Auto Expo. The Detroit based manufacturer had their best selling Ford Figo on display in a paprika red color and believe me, this is the color that most of the Ford Figo buyers should go for. It looks sensuous to say the least. The interiors again are spacious for a small car as also the quality of materials used is appreciable. The new alloy wheels also lend an air of class and now the looks of this car are more European. The head lamps are outlined by black lining. Inside, the instrument cluster has also undergone a change. The steering wheel however is still devoid of audio controls. The feel of the indicator stalks and other switches is crisp. The huge depression just above the glove box can be used for storing daily nip knacks. The music system as also the AC controls fall easily to hand. Boot space however is at a premium here. Rear seat space is also comfortable however Ford still persists with manual window down option instead of power windows at the rear.

[nggallery id=77]

The Fiesta Classic was displayed with the main aim of showing visitors that none of the features which were present in the Fiesta have been axed. Except for the blacked out head lamps and a slightly reworked bumper, there was nothing much of a differentiation except for the badges. The older Fiesta was also displayed. Expect the 2011 Ford Fiesta soon.

[nggallery id=78]

The biggest brute in the Ford lineup as of now in India, the Ford Endeavour, was also at display and this was the car which caught my attention. This was the automatic variant and build quality is something in the leagues of Volkswagen and group. This version however lacked the button controls on the steering wheel. The feeling of space is more than that of the Toyota Fortuner and also the quality of materials used seems to be a notch above that of the Fortuner. The big touchscreen navigation system is a must have for those buying the Endeavour. The Endeavour also has immense road presence. This is the dream car of my Chief Financial Officer and he is of the opinion that after seeing the car in flesh, he has made up his mind that he would buy this car by the end of 2011. Good thought and how about giving me the keys of this car for the weekend, eh?
