Tata Motors undertakes upgradation of ITI in Tinsukia, Assam, to train youth in automotive trade

In a bid to promote skill enhancement, employability and employment for the youth of India, Tata Motors announced its support for a State Government of Assam initiative, inaugurating the newly upgraded Tinsukia ITI (Industrial Training Institute), in Tinsukia, Assam. A joint initiative between the state government and Tata Motors, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is key in fulfilling objectives laid down in the Prime Minister’s National Skill Development Mission, for Assam and India’s North Eastern States.

The Tinsukia ITI will now boast world-class facilities and training modules, promoting skill enhancement, also creating opportunities for multi-skilling. Tata Motors has assisted with value addition to the ITI’s curriculum by introduction of e-learning modules, cut section of engines, transmission, gearbox, wall-charts, course material, along with assistance in the upgradation of the centre’s learning facilities. Tata Motors has also facilitated a 15-days training program for faculty members, on the latest automotive technologies at its plants in Jamshedpur and Pune. Tata Motors has guided the ITI in establishing a Driving Training Centre, with provision of a Driving Simulator for the purpose of training & enhancing driving skills. The company has also donated a brand new vehicle to the ITI. In addition, Borah Motors, the official sales, service and spares partner of Tata Motors commercial vehicles in Tinsukia, has set up a service centre in the Institute’s premises.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Ravi Pisharody, Executive Director, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, “Reports say that the average age in India will be 29 years by 2020 and if the country is to leverage its great asset of a youthful workforce, it is imperative to impart the right skills to ensure high employability of our people resources. We believe it is important that industry joins hands with the government to help create this skilled workforce.”

Partnering the State Government of Assam & other North Eastern states, Tata Motors will assist in upgrading nine technical institutes in the region. Including Tinsukia ITI, upgradation work is complete in Rowta (Assam) and Nagaon (Assam). In all, Tata Motors has partnered with about 130 ITI’s across the country.

In addition to upgrading these ITI’s, Tata Motors has also taken the initiative to the next level, by advising their local channel partners to establish their service centre’s at these institutes. This will allow students to gain ‘hands-on experience’ with the latest automotive technologies, also ensuring a steady supply of man-power at these workshops. To ensure sustainability of operations of these ITI’s, Tata Motors channel partners (Dealers / TASS) will share part of the revenue generated with these institutes. The institutes can also impart driver training to external students, a skill much in demand and a prospective job creator for the future, helping to further generate revenues for the ITI’s.

Tata Motors business partners M/s Bosch (India) Ltd., M/s Castrol (India) Ltd., M/s Fleet Guard Filters Pvt. Ltd., M/s Wabco (India) Ltd., M/s ZF Steering Gear (India) Ltd. and the Anand Group have also contributed in the upgradation of these ITI’s.
